Sustainable intensification of cereal-based farming systems in Eastern and Southern Africa

Project Inception Workshop

6-9 February 2012, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Sustainability and intensification indices (Carlo Azzari, IFPRI)

This workshop provides an opportunity for a broad group of important stakeholders to both learn about the project plans and to share their views on expectations from and opportunities for synergies with the project (days 1 and 2) and for the core project team to finalize the project details (days 3 and 4).

Presentation:

Indices:
Normalized indices (0,1) with weights, based on the first principal component, the linear combination capturing the greatest variation among the set of variables.
  • INT: hh average education, quantity of improved seed/area, quantity of ino. fertilizer/area, quantity of org. fertilizer/area, quantity of pesticides/area, use of irrigation, # of total TLU/area, ganyu labor/area (MWI)
  • Sustainability index: degradation, land and water availability and variability, erosion, SLM practices, NRM...
What are we missing?
  • INT: mechanization (MWI), soil quality, AEZ, yield? productivity? depending on the intensification definition;
  • SUST: diversity of crop, social capital, engagement of private sector, future potential in agriculture and markets access (in 5 years), # of trees planted and survived.

What is the loss of soil?
Market access: effects of it on both indices.
Morogoro received a lot of input subsidies for a while, explaining the dark red parts on the map of Tanzania, Malawi.

In the baseline we'll have to disaggregate the 2 aspects (sustainability and intensification).
